Biography

Mike Isaac
  • Born Plymouth UK 1962
  • Gets first guitar aged 10 and starts to teach himself.
  • Starts playing drums in garage band at 14
  • Buys first electric guitar at 15
  • Switches to bass age 16 in 1979, buys a Shaftsbury Rickenbacker 4001 copy in cherry sunburst.
  • Lots of jamming and the odd little gig over the next few years.
  • 1983 Joins working band Night after Night and plays covers, rock n roll and original material.
  • Gets first jazz bass Squire JV series 62 re-issue, using Acoustic amps and various 15” speakers
  • 1984 Meets jazz keyboardist Paul Harris and starts to play straight ahead jazz and funk/fusion music.
  • 1985 moves to London plays in a few bands and attends courses at Basstech and Goldsmiths college
  • Gets first fretless bass
  • 1988 returns to Plymouth and meets jazz pianist Dave Thompson who is a big influence. Continues to do jazz gigs and general freelance work. Finds and buys ’75 Jazz bass.
  • 1990 enrols on honours degree course at Salford University and moves to Manchester. Spends the next 3 years studying and gigging.
  • Runner up in John Lennon award songwriting competition.
  • 1991 Joins Gary Boyle’s Triple Echo which records an album in 1992.
  • 1993 graduates and goes into teaching, continues to gig and get involved in projects over the next decade or so.
  • 1997 gets first 6 string bass.
  • 1999 starts to play upright bass
  • 2002 returns to Devon to record album and get involved in local music scene.
  • Forms Mike Isaacs’ “Funk consortium” and “Fourjazz”. Freelance gigs, teaching and production work.
  • Prepares material for solo electric bass project
  • 2007 releases solo album Sunrisin’
  • 2008 Launches website
